The capital of Thailand is booming. In the last 5-10 years, we have witnessed a wide spread of development throughout the city. Private institutions and the government are keen to invest further, and help make Bangkok the epicentre for business and tourism within South East Asia.
One of the most prominent creations in recent years is the ICON SIAM complex. This mixed-used development has it all – shopping, residential and business facilities. In this article, we look in particular at the ICON Siam shopping mall that has recently opened and what delights it contains.
Location – Where is the ICON Siam complex?
ICON Siam is located on the banks of the Chao Phraya River in Khlong San, Bangkok. Located on the western side of the river, the complex backs on to Charoen Nakhon Road.
Due to this fact, the complex currently doesn’t have fantastic transport links. The nearest BTS Skytrain station is over 1km away. Construction is underway however on the Gold Line monorail. This monorail will connect directly to ICON Siam and lead to other important interchange stations such as the BTS Silom Line and the MRT Purple Line. This will mean that ICON Siam becomes much more accessible. This monorail is set for completion in 2020.
Aside from the monorail, plans are also being made to upgrade the four piers located next to the complex. These will be kitted out with both private and public ferries that can transport the public across the Chao Phraya River.
What You Will Find Inside ICON Siam
Part of the complex is the epic ICON Siam mall. This development has been lovingly known as “The Mother of All Malls” due to its sheer size and scale. You may think we are exaggerating, but if you visit the mall you will understand why! The following are some basic stats and features of this mega-mall:
– Over 500 retail shops
– Over 100 restaurants and fast food chains
– Retailers hail from over 30 different countries
– Fantastic riverside location
– 6 floors
– Also contains the Siam Sook floating market

As you can see the resume of this mall is impressive. With a whopping 6 floors full of shops, there is something for everyone. The first three floors are generally consigned to fashion outlets such as H&M, Dior and Hermes. Other floors are taken up with anything from electronics and homeware, and of course the dazzling array of restaurants.
The design of the mall is superb. It looks modern and clean. The exterior façade has a combination of exposed glass and whitewashed walls dashed with yellow trim. The interior is light and airy and has a myriad of escalators to make it easier for shoppers to move through many floors.
It is difficult to list all of the shops and restaurants present within the mall. You really need to visit this awesome place for yourself. The following are some of the most popular attractions within ICON Siam.
Bangkok’s first Apple Store
This might sound like a strange one but it is hugely popular. The Apple Store at ICON Siam is a standalone building – it has an ultra-clean design and looks more like a museum than an electronics shop! Outside the store, there is a series of beautiful gardens – visiting this flagship store is an experience in itself. If you love all things Apple then make sure you don’t miss out on a trip to the store in ICON Siam.
Takashimaya Store
The Takashimaya department store is a staple of Japan. Within the ICON Siam mall, there is a colossal 7 story Takashimaya that even the most dedicated of shoppers will struggle to tackle. If you want a fantastic Japanese shopping experience, you must visit this store – it has everything. Would you believe that this department store alone contains over 500 different brands?
Indoor Floating Market
Thailand is known for having some exceptional floating markets. ICON Siam has attempted to recreate this tradition with the inclusion of an indoor version in the shopping mall. This attraction is magnificent. The architecture and design are traditional and look fantastic. Furthermore, you can find some brilliant crafts, foods and beverages made by locals – it is a great experience.
We hope that this article has conveyed some of the excitement waiting for your at the ICON Siam mall. It is possible to spend an entire day here and not get bored! This is certainly a must-visit attraction for both tourists, and those living in Bangkok.
